North Dumfries Township Council consists of 1 Mayor, elected at-large across the entire Township, and 4 Councillors representing 4 wards. The Mayor is the head of Council and the spokesperson for the Township on municipal and political matters. The Mayor is also the Township representative on Regional Council. The Mayor and 4 Councillors are elected to serve a 4-year term in the fall of an election year, with the next municipal election scheduled for November 2010.
Through a mandate given to Township Council by the voting majority at election time, Council provides general direction to the municipal corporation through its policy decisions. These decisions are the 'policy tone' that drive service levels, property taxes and water and sewer rates to name a few. The Township Council is a legislative body that, among other things, establish and interpret bylaws, establishes planning guidelines for the Township, and approves operating and capital budgets.
With the new structure of Township Council (reduced from 6 Councillors to 4 in 2000AD), the demands and workload of each Councillor is significant. The Mayor and Council are always receptive to your input and comments, and your attendance at Committee or Council is welcome.
Council Meeting Times:
Regular Council meetings are held on the first Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. and the third Monday of the month at 9:00 a.m. On the fourth Monday of each month a special Council meeting is held in the evening if required.
If the Monday is a declared holiday, the meeting will be on the Tuesday of the same week.
